چکیده

Ackermann, W. W. (University of Michigan, Ann Arbor), D. C. Cox, H. Kurtz, C. D. Powers, and S. J. Davies. Effect of poliovirus on deoxyribonucleic acid synthesis in HeLa cells. J. Bacteriol. 91:1943-1952. 1966.-Both poliovirus and arginine stimulated deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) synthesis in cultures of HeLa cells which were preconditioned by incubation in a medium deficient in arginine. However, the number of cells producing DNA was unaffected. DNA synthesis in such preconditioned cells was 10 to 20% of the maximal value obtained with a full complement of amino acids. Inhibition of DNA synthesis was produced in these cultures either by increasing the multiplicity of exposure above 40 plaque-forming units of virus per cell or by increasing the concentration of the deficient amino acid at the time of virus addition. Inhibition of DNA synthesis resulted from a reduction in the fraction of cells producing DNA. The concentration of arginine required for viral inhibition of DNA synthesis is greater than that for viral multiplication.

Bacteriol. 92:1051-1054. 1966.-Deletion of arginine from a culture medium reduced the rate of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) synthesis in uninfected HeLa cells. The normal rate was promptly restored by addition of arginine. Deletion of arg...

Specific effect of guanidine in the programming of poliovirus inhibition of deoxyribonucleic acid synthesis.

Inhibition of HeLa cell deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) synthesis, which occurred by the 4th to 5th hr after infection with poliovirus, could be blocked completely by guanidine only when it was present before the 2nd hr. At the 2nd hr, there was no significant ribonucleic acid (RNA)-replicase activity, and addition of guanidine inhibited all production of virus but allowed 57% of maximal DNA inhibi...

The biosynthesis of ribonucleic acid following infection with a ribonucleic acid virus.

The replication of deoxyribonucleic acid viruses is dependent on the synthesis of deoxyribonucleic acid, and increases in the activity of deoxyribonucleic acid nucleotidyltransferase (DNA polymerase) have been demonstrated in bacterial and mammalian cells infected with deoxyribonucleic acid viruses (1, 2). In contrast, several lines of evidence suggest that synthesis of DNA is not a prerequisit...

Virus-induced interference in heterologously infected HeLa cells.

In doubly infected HeLa cells, poliovirus type 1 rapidly and completely dominates vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) plaque-forming unit production. Poliovirus type 1 shuts off incorporation of amino acids into VSV-specific proteins within 2 hr after superinfection of cells already committed to massive synthesis of VSV proteins. However, poliovirus type 1 appears to have little, if any, direct ef...

Poliovirus Particles do not Form in Preinfected Cells with Reovirus

Background and Aims: Inhibition of viral growth in coinfected cells with two different viruses has been described. This phenomenon known as viral interference can occur in several virus host systems such as interference of enterovirus infection on poliovirus vaccine strains. In this study we superinfected reovirus infected HeLa cells with poliovirus to determine if poliovirus can replicate in s...
